- Got back from Birmingham last night right around dinner time. Luckily, I had thought ahead (a rare occurrence, I can assure you) so there was a big container of taco meat, corn tortillas and taco fixings waiting in the refrigerator.
- In Birmingham we were able to find only one pair of jeans for the boy who is taller than he is wide. We did manage to find 5-6 t-shirts that fit his skinny, long armed self. All in all, a successful, if not exhausting, shopping trip.
- Went to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. As a white northerner, I have very mixed feelings about what I saw.
- Dinner at Red Robin was the only food we bought. Two coolers of goodies from home made sure we weren't glutened and that we didn't spend money on crappy food.
- Christian was right - coming back to Meridian after shopping in the big city was kind of depressing. I am very sad that we do not have a Whole Foods or Super Target right around the corner... but what are you going to do?
- Spent just under $100 at Whole Foods, stocking up. Wednesday night at the hotel after we went swimming, I spent a few minutes looking things up on Amazon to see how much I can order them for. I had a nice list to take to Whole Foods, where I found some things significantly cheaper (quinoa for almost $1 less per lb) and some things more expensive (Annie's gf mac and cheese $2.99 per box vs. $2.19 per box from Amazon). I bought what was cheaper and will order the rest from Amazon.
- Say what you want about Whole Foods, but they will always get my business. When a grocery associate found out that Alex was bummed that his brothers had bagels at breakfast and he didn't get one, she gave us an entire pack to try. I kept telling her that I was going to buy them anyway but she insisted on giving me the entire pack. That $6 pack of bagels bought them a lifelong customer.
- GPS isn't always right.
- Driving in the hard rain sucks.
- We had a great family "weekend" away and can't wait to do it again!

I kow--I wish sooo bad we had a whole foods here...a while back I saw on the news where they were encouraging everyone to buy local and all and I thought yeah well give us some decent places to spend our money and we will....wow that's a great price on quinoa---lol gotta love really good sales clerks!(the bagel lady)--I have a nephew like that tall and skinny-really a pain in the arse to buy him jeans-either ebay or have to order from the wrangler place....sooo frustrating.... glad you're back safely.....
Your Civil rights museum reminds me of when we were in Biloxi and we went to the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and Museum. Well we didn't actually go because my husband (The History Teacher) was disgusted when we drove into the parking lot and saw a huge truck with the confederate flag. He said he couldn't stomach it. And the funny thing is that it's not even a "real" presidential library as, of course, Davis was not a real president. He thought it was pretty nervy of Mississippi to suggest he was....
Apparently much of it was destroyed by Katrina.
Julie - it is crazy to me that we don't have more local produce available to us. We are a rural state! I will send you something that was posted on a private message board that really opened my eyes. This woman lives in Mississippi and has a lot to say about food here.
Oh Christine, I could tell you a story (or ten) that would make you just shake your head.
